FromSoftware, renowned for Elden Ring, has reassured fans that their commitment to crafting immersive single-player experiences remains strong, even as they explore multiplayer ventures. The recent Nintendo Direct on April 2 unveiled The Duskbloods, an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch 2 that blends PvPvE elements with the studio's signature Soulslike atmosphere. This announcement surprised many, especially with another multiplayer title, Elden Ring Nightreign, on the horizon.

In an insightful post on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice blog dated April 4, FromSoftware's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, addressed fans' concerns. He clarified that despite the upcoming multiplayer projects, FromSoftware's dedication to single-player games remains unwavering. "As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward," Miyazaki stated. He further emphasized their ongoing commitment to single-player titles, such as the announced Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring.

The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki delved into the thematic core of The Duskbloods, which revolves around the concept of blood. Players will assume the role of "Bloodsworn," individuals endowed with superhuman abilities derived from special blood. While drawing parallels to vampires, Miyazaki noted that these characters would not embody the typical monstrous imagery associated with vampirism.

Central to the game's narrative is the pursuit of "The First Blood," which emerges during "The Twilight of Humanity"—an event spanning various times and locations. The game's settings will range from Gothic and Victorian-style maps to those depicting the final years of the early modern period, as seen in the trailer featuring a train.

Miyazaki explained that blood in The Duskbloods serves as a conceptual element rather than a graphic depiction of violence. "Blood symbolizes one of the game’s key themes—the history it holds, the power it passes on, the fates it weaves and the marker of those who have surpassed the limitations of their own humanity," he said.

Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer

The trailer for The Duskbloods showcased a diverse array of characters, each with distinct designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players would have over a dozen characters to choose from, with customization options available. "I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them," he remarked.

The game's multiplayer component begins at a central "hub" where players select and customize their characters before entering online matches supporting up to eight players. After each match, players return to the hub to claim rewards, primarily character customization items.

Matches typically conclude when only one player remains, though some may have unique victory conditions, such as defeating a formidable boss or navigating special scenarios. Miyazaki emphasized the game's focus on player growth and challenge, stating, "Regardless of whether it’s PvP or PvE, the idea is to provide players with an experience that allows them to learn and hone their skills as they play. We’ve therefore designed the PvE boss encounters to present a tough challenge and a sense of accomplishment upon defeating them."

Additionally, Miyazaki introduced the concept of "roles" within the game, where players assume specific responsibilities and objectives. Examples include "Destined Rivals," where players must locate and defeat their rival, and "Destined Companion," where forming a bond with a partner yields special rewards. These roles can be assigned through blood customization, enhancing the role-playing experience and adding depth to player interactions.

The insights shared on Nintendo's Creator’s Voice blog have provided a fascinating glimpse into FromSoftware's plans for The Duskbloods.
