Goddess Order Developers Share Insights on Crafting Immersive Fantasy RPG Worlds
Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: A Deep Dive into Pixel Art, World-Building, and Combat
This interview with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director) from Pixel Tribe, the developers behind the upcoming Kakao Games title Goddess Order, offers a fascinating glimpse into the creation of this pixel RPG.
Crafting Pixel Perfection
Droid Gamers: What inspires the pixel sprites?
Ilsun: Goddess Order, a mobile action RPG, builds upon the pixel art success of Crusaders Quest. Our high-quality pixel art aims for a console-like feel, emphasizing narrative. Character design draws from a vast wellspring of gaming and storytelling experiences. Pixel art is about subtly conveying form and movement through tiny units; it's less about specific references and more about the nuanced impact of accumulated experience. Collaboration is key; the initial characters—Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan—were born from solo work but evolved through team discussions, blending our collective creativity. Ongoing dialogue with scenario writers and combat designers ensures character design aligns with the game's narrative and mechanics.
From Characters to Worlds
Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building in a fantasy RPG?
Terron J.: Goddess Order's world sprung from its pixel art characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Yan established the foundation for immersive gameplay. The world-building process centers on deeply understanding these characters, their stories, missions, and purposes. Their inherent vitality and narratives—tales of growth and heroism—shaped the game's scenario. The game's emphasis on manual controls directly reflects the power and agency we felt emanating from the characters during development.
Designing Dynamic Combat
Droid Gamers: How are combat styles and animations designed?
Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat system features three characters taking turns, utilizing linked skills for synergistic effects, all within a mobile-friendly framework. Design focuses on creating unique roles and positions for each character to optimize battle formations. We consider factors like attack power, range, and support abilities (like healing). Linked skill timing is crucial for strategic advantage. Characters are rigorously evaluated to ensure unique utility and intuitive controls.
Ilsun: The art style visually reflects these combat characteristics. Weapon choice, appearance, and movement all contribute to the combat's visual impact. While 2D pixel art is used, the characters move with a three-dimensional fluidity, setting Goddess Order apart. Our studio utilizes real-world weapons to study movement for authenticity.
Terron J.: Technical optimization is paramount, ensuring smooth combat even on lower-spec devices without sacrificing cutscene immersion. The focus is on a seamless, engaging player experience.
The Future of Goddess Order
Ilsun: Goddess Order blends JRPG storytelling with unique graphics and combat. The narrative follows the Lisbeth Knights' quest to save the world. Individual knight origin stories enrich the world. Post-launch, we plan to add activities like quests and treasure hunts, alongside continuous updates to chapter and origin stories, and challenging advanced content.
This detailed look at Goddess Order's development reveals a dedication to crafting a rich and engaging pixel RPG experience.
