Hunger: Extraction RPG Goes Multiplayer

by Hannah Jan 06,2026

Extraction shooters have become increasingly common, and developers need innovative twists to make their mark in this saturated genre. That's why I was excited to meet Good Fun Corporation to preview Hunger—their upcoming Unreal Engine 5-powered action-RPG blending zombie survival with extraction mechanics.

The developers emphasize Hunger isn't just another extraction shooter clone. Based on an impressive early build (with Early Access still distant and no firm release date yet), Hunger stands poised to avoid feeling like generic Steam shovelware.

Hunger immediately catches attention with its "Renaissance gothic" aesthetic and technical prowess. Combining antique firearms with brutal melee weapons amid decaying towns and grand castles, its environments showcase UE5's capabilities beautifully—with exceptional foliage, lighting, and texture detail making this one of the engine's strongest showcases.

The gameplay promises ARC Raiders' accessibility blended with Escape from Tarkov's depth. Players start in the Outer Ramparts hub—a social space where you can interact with NPCs like Piro (an eccentric masked vendor) or Reynauld (the finger-missing Expedition Master who queues raids). Early Access launches with three 1km² maps featuring underground dungeons, dynamic weather, and an estimated 50-60 hours of content unlocking the Cauldron region.

Professions add progression variety—six roles spanning gathering (Scavenging, Conservator, Naturalist) and crafting (Metallurgy, Gunsmithing, Cooking). Lore unfolds through extracts like Missives and Maps, rewarding exploration with XP and narrative reveals.

The Hungered enemies showcase tactical variety—silent melee avoids drawing crowds, while gunfire risks alerting hordes. Thirty-three weapons range from primitive firearms to exotic ammunition types, complemented by a Mastery Tree offering four progression paths.

Solo and duo players aren't disadvantaged—progression cosmetics reward all playstyles without predatory monetization. The $30 base game avoids free-to-play pitfalls, supplemented by optional "Support the Developers" cosmetic bundles.

Sessions target 30-35 minute durations for accessible play, with death still granting meaningful progression. From Hell Let Loose creators, Hunger shapes up as a distinctive contender—we'll share more updates as development continues.
