The Witcher 4 Tech Demo Revealed

During Unreal Fest Orlando this week, Epic Games and CD Projekt Red revealed an exciting technical demonstration of The Witcher 4. Developed using Unreal Engine 5's cutting-edge tools, this preview offers glimpses into Ciri's upcoming adventure—showcasing potential characters, locations, and the game's immersive atmosphere.
1. This is a Tech Demo, Not Actual Gameplay
Cinematic Director Kajetan Kapuściński demonstrated the footage live, controlling Ciri’s movements—but CDPR clarifies this isn't representative of final gameplay. While environments like the mountains and port town will appear in The Witcher 4, specific quests and NPC interactions may change.
"This demo was crafted collaboratively with Epic Games to test technologies powering the future game," Kapuściński explains. It reflects CDPR's artistic vision rather than confirmed mechanics.
2. Can PlayStation 5 Really Deliver These Graphics?
The demo's stunning visuals ran smoothly at 60 FPS on a standard PS5—raising skepticism among fans familiar with past downgrades. Epic Games' Wyeth Johnson insists Unreal Engine 5.6 optimizations make this achievable: "Players demand high performance across hardware, and we're eliminating bottlenecks to deliver it."
3. Exploring the Northern Kingdom of Kovir
The demo unfolds in Kovir, a mineral-rich northern realm bordering Redania. CDPR's Charles Tremblay highlights Nanite Foliage technology enabling sprawling, detailed forests that dwarf The Witcher 3's landscapes. "Creating immersive wilderness has always been core to our games," he says.
4. Meet Kelpie: Ciri’s Loyal Steed
Geralt had Roach—now Ciri rides Kelpie, a black mare from Witcher lore capable of magical summoning and impressive jumps. "We want traversal to feel seamless," Tremblay notes, hinting at improvements over Roach’s infamous pathfinding.
5. Hunting Down a Manticore
The demo frames a salt merchant's contract leading Ciri to battle a manticore—a creature originally planned for Wild Hunt. Director Sebastian Kalemba emphasizes blending gritty Witcher realism with adventurous storytelling.
6. Valdrest: A Bustling Port Town
The coastal settlement houses over 300 NPCs with diverse animations courtesy of Unreal’s metahuman tech. Guards, merchants, and townsfolk display unique behaviors—enhancing immersion beyond Novigrad’s crowds.
7. Dynamic World Interactions
NPCs react organically to Ciri and environmental triggers. Guards mutter insults, chickens scurry from dropped crates, and tavern brawls erupt—though CDPR remains tight-lipped on whether these systems are scripted or systemic.
8. Seamless Cinematic Transitions
Dialogue sequences blend naturally into gameplay without loading, building on Cyberpunk 2077’s fluid first-person techniques—now adapted for third-person immersion.
9. First Look at Lan Exeter
The demo concludes with a reveal of Kovir’s Venice-inspired winter capital, Lan Exeter—a canal-laced city previously only mentioned in books and games.
10. Pushing Open-World RPG Boundaries
"We’re defining the next generation of RPGs," Kalemba states. Both CDPR and Epic aim to minimize technological barriers, letting developers realize ambitious visions seamlessly.
