Silent Hill 2 Remake Devs Want to Prove That They've Evolved
Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 Remake has been a critical and commercial triumph, but the studio isn't resting on its laurels. Their next project aims to solidify their position as a major player in the horror genre. Read on to discover more about their ambitious plans.
Bloober Team's Continued Ascent
Building on Success
The overwhelmingly positive response to the Silent Hill 2 Remake has been a validation for Bloober Team, silencing much of the initial skepticism surrounding their involvement. While acknowledging past doubts, the team is determined to prove their capabilities extend beyond a single successful title.
At the Xbox Partner Preview on October 16th, Bloober Team unveiled their next horror game, Cronos: The New Dawn. Game Designer Wojciech Piejko emphasized a departure from the Silent Hill 2 style, stating in a Gamespot interview, "We don't want to make a similar game." Development on Cronos began in 2021, shortly after the release of The Medium.
Director Jacek Zieba described Cronos as their "second punch" in a two-hit combo, with the Silent Hill 2 Remake being the "first." He highlighted the initial disbelief surrounding their ability to handle such a beloved franchise, given their previous work.
Zieba reflected, "Nobody believed we could deliver, and we delivered. That was a big honor... As horror creators, we love Silent Hill." The team's dedication and perseverance resulted in an 86 Metacritic score, a testament to their hard work and overcoming significant online negativity. "They made the impossible possible," Piejko commented, acknowledging the immense pressure and eventual triumph.
Bloober Team 3.0: A New Era
Piejko views Cronos: The New Dawn as a showcase of their ability to create compelling original IPs. The game features a time-traveling protagonist, "The Traveler," navigating the past and future to combat a pandemic and mutant threat.
Leveraging the experience gained from the Silent Hill 2 Remake, Bloober Team aims to build upon their past, moving beyond the limitations of earlier titles like Layers of Fear and Observer. Zieba stated that the foundation for Cronos benefited from the knowledge gained during the Silent Hill project.
The Silent Hill 2 Remake marks a pivotal point, representing "Bloober Team 3.0." Encouraged by the positive reception to both the Cronos reveal and the Silent Hill 2 Remake, the team is confident in their future.
Zieba's vision is for Bloober Team to be recognized as a premier horror developer, stating, "We want to find our niche, and we think we found our niche." Piejko added, "We gathered a team that loves horror... it would not be easy to switch [to other genres], and we don't want to."
