Life is Strange gets candid feedback request from Square Enix

Square Enix Seeks Fan Input Following Life is Strange: Double Exposure's Underwhelming Reception

Square Enix is conducting a post-launch survey targeting Life is Strange fans after the latest installment, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially. The survey delves into various aspects of the game, even directly questioning players on its perceived value. The gathered feedback is expected to significantly shape the direction of future Life is Strange titles.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure, released in October 2024, aimed to capitalize on the popularity of Max Caulfield, the beloved protagonist from the original 2015 game. Despite this, the game's reception was less than stellar. Metacritic currently shows a 73 critic score and a 4.2 user score for the PS5 version, highlighting a disconnect between expectations and reality. Many critics point to significant narrative choices as contributing factors to this lukewarm response.

Further complicating matters, developer Deck Nine Studios announced layoffs in December 2024. In an effort to understand the game's shortcomings, Square Enix distributed a 15-minute questionnaire to Life is Strange fans. This survey probes key areas, including narrative structure, gameplay mechanics, technical performance, and ultimately, whether players felt the purchase was worthwhile and if their experience impacted their interest in future installments.

Analyzing the Reasons Behind Life is Strange: Double Exposure's Underperformance

The survey's results are crucial for Square Enix to pinpoint the game's weaknesses. The publisher clearly anticipated a more positive response. This contrasts sharply with the generally positive reception of Deck Nine's previous work, Life is Strange: True Colors, which was lauded for its compelling narrative and emotional resonance. Alex Chen, the protagonist of True Colors, also proved far more engaging for players than the characters in Double Exposure.

The future of the Life is Strange franchise remains uncertain. While Double Exposure hinted at potential storylines for future entries, the feedback Square Enix collects will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping upcoming games. The extent to which future games will incorporate fan feedback remains to be seen, presenting a complex balancing act between fan service and creative vision.
