Funcom Trials Major PvP Shift in Dune: Awakening

by Claire Oct 13,2025

Funcom recently confirmed in an AMA that they're "crafting a plan" to enhance PvP in Dune: Awakening's Deep Desert—an area players criticized as "toxic" due to rampant griefing, even after developers removed the controversial Ornithopter crushing mechanic.

Creative director Joel Bylos emphasized their philosophy: "PvE players deserve full access to endgame content without mandatory PvP interactions. Our vision isn't about forcing combat-oriented systems on players who prefer purely environmental challenges."

"The Deep Desert's core premise remains—a weekly-resetting high-risk zone offering premium rewards," Bylos explained. "We envisioned players forming alliances to survive this brutally competitive landscape, where constant vigilance against both environment and enemies creates unparalleled tension on Arrakis."

Responding to player feedback, Funcom will designate "Partial Warfare (PvE)" zones within the Deep Desert for safer resource gathering, while maintaining key locations—major spice fields, derelict ships, and Landsraad bases—as high-value "War of Assassins (PvP)" territories.

These adjustments coincide with the launch of Dune: Awakening's Public Test Client, where players can trial major gameplay overhauls like quadrupling the PvE-safe zone near the Shield Wall (expanding from Row A to include Rows B-D and half of Row E). Currently, only Row A offers PvE protection—meaning nearly 50% of the Deep Desert may transition from PvP to PvE rulesets.

While these changes aren't guaranteed for the live version, PC Gamer notes the test server modifications demonstrate Funcom's commitment to refining endgame balance. The survival MMO has achieved remarkable success since its June 10 launch, reaching 189,333 concurrent Steam players and surpassing 1 million total players—making it Funcom's fastest-selling title.

Our 8/10 review praised Dune: Awakening's faithful adaptation of Herbert's universe: "This survival MMO brilliantly captures Arrakis' essence—both its grandeur and harshness. The progression from parched outsider to planetary powerbroker delivers consistent satisfaction, though combat mechanics and endgame structure need refinement."
