Bioshock Creator Was Shocked by Irrational Games Closure

Irrational Games' Closure: A Retrospective by Ken Levine

Ken Levine, creator of the acclaimed BioShock series, recently reflected on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the success of BioShock Infinite. In an interview with Edge Magazine, Levine described the decision as "complicated," revealing that the studio's shuttering came as a surprise to most, including himself. He had hoped Irrational would continue, despite his own departure, stating, "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company."

Levine's personal struggles during BioShock Infinite's development contributed to his decision to leave Irrational. He acknowledges his inability to effectively lead during that period, explaining, "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader." Despite the circumstances, he strived to ensure a smooth transition for the team, prioritizing "the least painful lay-off we could possibly do," including providing transition packages and ongoing support.

The closure of Irrational, known for its contributions to the horror RPG genre (System Shock 2) and the BioShock franchise, left a mark on the industry. Levine even suggests that a BioShock remake could have been a suitable project for the studio to undertake.

Looking ahead to the highly anticipated BioShock 4, currently under development by Cloud Chamber Studios, fans are hoping the lessons learned from BioShock Infinite's development and release will inform the new game's creation. Speculation points towards a possible open-world setting, while maintaining the series' signature first-person perspective. While announced five years ago, an official release date remains elusive.
