Pesten With Cards: A Classic Dutch Card Game

Pesten With Cards, known in Dutch as "Pesten met Kaarten," translates literally to "Bullying With Cards." This engaging game shares similarities with other card games played around the world, such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, and Uno. The primary objective is to be the first player to discard all of your cards. A crucial rule is that the winner must announce "Last Card" before playing their final card. Failure to do so results in a penalty of drawing two additional cards.

The game can be played with multiple decks of cards, including jokers. Each player starts with seven cards, and the remaining cards form the draw pile or stock. At the game's onset, the top card of the stock is turned face-up to start the discard pile. Players then take turns clockwise, attempting to match the top card of the discard pile either by number or suit. Jokers and Jacks are versatile and can be played on any card. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw from the stock. If the drawn card is playable, the player may choose to play it immediately or keep it for a later turn.

Last Card

When a player has only one card left after playing, they must click the "Last Card" button above their hand to alert others. Forgetting to do this and playing the last card to win the game incurs a penalty of drawing two cards from the stock, and the last card played is voided. Incorrectly announcing "Last Card" also results in a two-card penalty. Players can press the "Last Card" button at any time, even out of turn, to ensure they remember to announce it before playing their final card.

Winning the round is achieved by playing the last card onto the discard pile, provided it is not one of the special cards detailed below.

Special Cards

Each card placed on the discard pile may trigger specific actions based on its number or type. The actions can vary widely in the Netherlands, and players can customize these in the game settings to match their preferred rules. Here are the standard actions:

• Joker: The next player must draw five cards. If they have a joker, they can play it, increasing the next player's draw to ten cards. Each additional joker played adds five more cards to the draw. Players who draw cards cannot play them immediately; the turn passes to the next player.

• Two: The next player draws two cards. If they have a two, they can play it, increasing the draw to four cards for the subsequent player. Each additional two adds two more cards to the draw. If enabled in settings, a joker can be played on a two, adding five cards to the draw. Twos cannot be played on jokers. As with jokers, drawn cards cannot be played immediately.

• Seven: The player must play another card on top of the seven. If unable to do so, they must draw a card from the stock. Remember to say "Last Card" if playing a seven allows you to play your final card.

• Eight: The next player skips their turn, and the turn passes to the player after them. In a two-player game, playing an eight allows the player to take another turn (similar to the seven).

• Ten: All players must pass one card from their hand to the player on their left. Click on the card you wish to pass.
