Chess is one of the world’s oldest and most beloved board games, enjoyed by millions globally. You can play offline against an AI engine on your mobile device or challenge chess masters online from around the world. Originating in India around the 6th century AD, chess spread across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.

Chess is played on an 8×8 square board, with rows numbered 1 to 8 and columns labeled a through h. The 64 squares alternate between light and dark colors, and the board is oriented with a light square on each player’s right-hand side.

Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. White always moves first. After the opening move, players take turns moving one piece per turn.

There are over 2000 chess variants, including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
