Hnefatafl is a classic Scandinavian board game with variants enjoyed across medieval Europe long before the rise of chess. In these strategic Tafl confrontations, two unequal forces clash. The attacking black army seeks to capture the white king, while the defending white forces must protect their sovereign and secure his escape.

Often celebrated as the Game of the Vikings, Hnefatafl brings legendary tales to life, from Muscovite invasions of Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. Yet one theme remains constant through every story: the relentless pursuit of the king.

Though easy to learn, the game rewards deep tactics and clever foresight. Surround your opponent's pieces, think several moves ahead, set cunning traps, and force a surrender. Will you seize the king for riches and renown? Or can the royal guard withstand the invaders and ensure their king's safe flight?
