Hang

The Hang is a fascinating musical instrument that falls within the idiophone class, having originated in Switzerland. Crafted meticulously from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet, these halves are glued together at the rim to form a hollow interior, resulting in a distinctive 'UFO shape'. The upper surface, known as the "Ding", features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields', all meticulously hammered into place. On the other hand, the bottom surface, referred to as the "Gu", is a smooth expanse with a rolled hole at its center. Striking the rim of this hole produces a tuned note. This instrument is also commonly known as a handpan.

The Hang's design is inspired by the physical principles that govern the steelpan, yet it innovatively functions as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development was the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and various other musical instruments.
