Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other, 29 uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. These cards are divided into the four traditional French suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card hierarchy within each suit goes from highest to lowest as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The goal? To capture tricks that contain valuable cards.

Each card's value is as follows:

• Jacks - 3 points each
• Nines - 2 points each
• Aces - 1 point each
• Tens - 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7) - no points

The sum of these card points totals 28. In certain versions of the game, an additional point is awarded for the last trick, bringing the total to 29, which explains the game's name. However, many modern players omit this extra point, yet the game retains the name 29 even with only 28 points in play.

In traditional setups, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full 52-card deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player is dealt one card of each of these suits. Meanwhile, the Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership employing one red and one black Six.
