Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a beloved card game deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture, especially popular in the northern regions. Referred to as Ta La in the south and Phom in the north, this game requires strategic thinking as players aim to collect and discard cards to form sets, known as Phom, while minimizing the score of cards not included in these sets. Played with a standard 52-card deck, the game's diverse styles make it a thrilling choice for entertainment during family gatherings and festive occasions.

Key Terms in Phom and Ta La

• Phom: A set of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or three cards of the same value.
• Junk cards: Cards that do not belong to any Phom.
• Ù: Achieved when a player has three Phoms, resulting in no junk cards and an absolute win.
• Stomach: The remaining cards after all players have been dealt their hands.
• Mom: Occurs when a player ends the game without being able to form any Phom.
• Take the pin: In the last turn, playing a junk card that is taken by another player.
• Send: In the final turn, if a player's junk card can be added to another player's Phom, it can be sent, and it won't count against the player at the game's end.
• Compensation: In the last turn, if a player takes another's pin and another player subsequently achieves Ù, the player who took the pin receives compensation. The next player to take a pin must pay the first pin-taker. Additionally, drawing three consecutive cards also counts as compensation.
• Re: After playing cards, if another player discards, the player can take another turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

The game accommodates 2 to 4 players. Each player receives 9 cards, while the dealer or the previous winner gets 10 cards. The remaining cards, known as the Stomach, are placed in the middle of the table, face down. The game proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player who has 10 cards.

In each round, the first player discards a card. The next player can either take this card to form a Phom or draw from the Stomach. After picking up a card, the player discards one, and the cycle continues. The game ends when a player achieves Ù or after four rounds, at which point the scores of junk cards are tallied to determine the winner.

In the final turn, players must lay down all their Phoms, send any applicable cards to other players' Phoms, and discard their last card. The remaining junk cards are scored as follows:

• The player with the lowest score wins.
• A, J, Q, K are valued at 1, 11, 12, and 13 points respectively, while other cards are scored according to their numerical value.
• In case of a tie, the player who discards first wins.

Final scores are calculated as:

• Winner: +6 points
• Second place: -1 point
• Third place: -2 points
• Last place: -3 points
• Player who gets the pin: -4 points
• Player who takes the pin: +4 points
• Player who achieves Ù or Ù Khan: +15 points (with each other player losing 5 points)
• Burned/burnt player: loses 4 points to the winner.
