Nvidia Boosts Nintendo Switch 2 Graphics by 10x with Custom GPU

by Ryan May 30,2025

If you've been following Nintendo's updates, you'll know that Nvidia recently shed light on the custom GPU behind the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Although not delving deep into specifics, Nvidia confirmed what IGN had previously reported—this GPU introduces AI upscaling via DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and ray tracing capabilities.

DLSS is an advanced AI-driven technology that leverages machine learning to upscale lower-resolution images in real-time, resulting in enhanced performance and superior image quality during gameplay. Nvidia described the Switch 2’s GPU as a "custom processor featuring an Nvidia GPU equipped with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores," promising breathtaking visuals and AI-driven improvements.

Nvidia elaborated further: "With over 1,000 engineer-years of effort poured into every aspect—from system and chip design to a custom GPU, APIs, and top-tier development tools—the Nintendo Switch 2 represents significant advancements."

These enhancements include up to 4K gaming in TV mode and a smooth 120 FPS at 1080p in handheld mode. The Switch 2 also supports HDR and AI upscaling, which sharpens visuals and ensures seamless gameplay.

The new RT Cores introduce real-time ray tracing, providing lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows for a more immersive experience. Meanwhile, Tensor Cores power AI-driven features like DLSS, which boosts resolution without compromising image quality.

Interestingly, Nvidia highlighted that Tensor Cores also enable AI-powered face tracking and background removal in video chat scenarios, enhancing social gaming and streaming experiences. During the Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the C button, designed for innovative chat functionality that integrates an external camera and the Switch 2’s built-in microphone. Nintendo emphasized that the tech intelligently filters out background noise and focuses on the player’s voice.

Nvidia boldly claimed that the Switch 2 offers up to 10 times the graphics performance of the original Switch, delivering smoother gameplay and sharper visuals. However, the exact method of this performance boost remains unexplained, leaving it to experts like Digital Foundry to verify once the console launches in June.

Additionally, Nvidia noted that Tensor Cores enhance AI-powered graphics while maintaining efficient power consumption, and RT Cores deliver dynamic lighting and realistic reflections. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via Nvidia G-SYNC ensures tear-free gameplay in handheld mode.

At a hardware-focused roundtable in New York, Nintendo representatives confirmed the Switch 2 utilizes DLSS but refrained from specifying the version or any customizations for the platform. Similarly, responses regarding ray tracing capabilities remained vague.

When queried about the GPU specifics, Tetsuya Sasaki, General Manager at Nintendo’s Technology Development Division, hinted that Nintendo prefers focusing on consumer value rather than technical minutiae. He added, "Our partner Nvidia will likely share more information."
