Kojima Denies Death Stranding 3 Rumors

Hideo Kojima has confirmed conceptual plans for Death Stranding 3, though he won't personally develop the title. Discover how Death Stranding 2 might spawn further sequels and what lies ahead for the visionary game creator.
Kojima Won't Direct Death Stranding 3
Death Stranding 2 Paves Way for Potential Franchise Expansion

In a May 8 interview with VGC, Death Stranding 2 director Hideo Kojima revealed he's already conceptualized Death Stranding 3, though he won't direct it himself. He explained how DS2's new "Plate Gates" mechanic could enable countless sequels set in different countries.
Kojima stated, "Using this Plate Gate concept, I could theoretically create unlimited sequels." However, he clarified, "While I have a concept for another sequel, I personally won't develop it - though another team could continue the series with my blessing."
Pandemic Influenced Death Stranding 2's Direction

The game director detailed how COVID-19 dramatically altered DS2's thematic focus. The original 2019 release coincidentally preceded global lockdowns, having explored isolation versus connection through its Chiral Network (Kojima's metaphor for the internet).

"During lockdowns, we saw both the internet's unifying power and its divisive consequences," Kojima observed. "This inspired DS2's contrasting theme about the dangers of overconnection - represented by the game's logo strands evolving from 'Let's Connect' to 'We Shouldn't Have Connected.'"
Kojima's Future Projects

Beyond Death Stranding, Kojima is developing several new projects. His Xbox-exclusive OD (Overdose) with Jordan Peele and Microsoft represents an ambitious vision five years in planning. He called it "a concept many initially dismissed as impossible."

A PlayStation collaboration will produce a "next-gen action espionage" title marking Kojima's 40th career anniversary in game development. "This will represent my creative culmination," he promised, with development commencing after DS2's completion.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach arrives June 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5. For latest updates on Kojima Productions' projects, check our official coverage.
