Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a hallmark of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The anticipated shorter play sessions of approximately 40 minutes each, inherent to Nightreign's multiplayer-focused design, wouldn't allow sufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The absence of the messaging system doesn't mean a complete removal of asynchronous features. In fact, key elements like the bloodstain mechanic will return, enhanced to allow players to not only witness but also loot the remains of fallen opponents. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of a more "compressed RPG" experience, prioritizing intensity and minimizing downtime. The game's three-day structure further supports this design philosophy.

While the asynchronous messaging system, a significant element of player engagement in previous titles, will be absent, Nightreign aims to deliver a fast-paced, multiplayer-centric experience with a high level of variety. The game is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024, though a precise release date is yet to be announced.
