Borderlands 4 PAX East Insights
Revamped Loot and Co-op Systems

Gearbox Software, the developers of Borderlands 4 (BL4), detailed extensive enhancements to the game’s loot and co-op mechanics during PAX East 2025 on May 10. Led by CEO Randy Pitchford, the team shared insights into the upgraded systems.
Drawing from player feedback since Borderlands 3 (BL3), Gearbox has streamlined the co-op lobby system, enabling seamless player connections. Gamers can join or leave sessions at any time without needing to reach specific milestones to play together.
Fast-travel options have been improved to allow players to quickly join friends across BL4’s expansive map. Like BL3, the game includes a level-scaling system, ensuring players can join any lobby and align with the world’s levels. Loot is individualized, with each player accessing their own reward pool.

The loot system in BL4 has been refined to reduce complexity, preventing players from feeling overwhelmed by item combinations. Legendary items will be less frequent but more impactful, enhancing their value. Specific rewards from defeating mini-bosses and major enemies replace fully randomized loot, making victories more rewarding. Players can replay missions and bosses through Moxxi’s Big Encore, eliminating the need to reload saves for loot farming.
Why No Mini-Map in Borderlands 4

At PAX East 2025, fans questioned the decision to exclude a mini-map given BL4’s vast world. Randy Pitchford explained that the team prioritized an immersive experience, encouraging players to engage directly with the game environment.
He stated, "We created a massive world where many activities are local, but others span great distances. A mini-map isn’t ideal for navigating multiple objectives miles apart. A compass better supports this exploration."
Pitchford emphasized that the new compass system guides players effectively, encouraging them to focus on the game rather than a map. "Experience the world first, and you’ll understand why we made these choices. The scale of this world makes playing it more rewarding than navigating a map," he added.

Gearbox is confident as they approach the game’s launch, building on the momentum from the Borderlands 4 State of Play and an earlier release date announcement. The studio plans to showcase more at events like Fan Fest, Bilibili World, and Gamescom, offering fans further glimpses into BL4’s offerings.
Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay updated with the latest game details in our article below!
