Blizzard Comments on Marvel Rivals, Cites Overwatch 2 Parallels

by Sebastian Dec 22,2025

Since its announcement, Marvel Rivals has drawn inevitable comparisons to Overwatch. While featuring Marvel's iconic heroes and villains, the game clearly follows Blizzard's blueprint as a competitive hero shooter with remarkably similar mechanics. Both titles operate as free-to-play live service games that rely on new character releases to maintain player engagement.

Marvel Rivals has experienced explosive growth since its December launch, reportedly siphoning players from Overwatch 2. Industry observers note declining interest in Blizzard's title as NetEase's superhero shooter continues gaining momentum.

In a recent GamesRadar interview, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller acknowledged the shifting competitive landscape created by Marvel Rivals' massive player acquisition.

"We're operating in a completely new competitive environment," Keller explained. "This marks the first time Overwatch has faced such direct competition from a fundamentally similar game."

Surprisingly, Keller framed this competition positively, expressing enthusiasm about seeing Marvel Rivals' creative adaptations of Overwatch's established formula. However, he admitted Marvel's success has forced Blizzard to reconsider its cautious approach, stating: "Playing it safe is no longer an option."

This realization has led Blizzard to announce sweeping 2025 changes for Overwatch 2. Beyond standard content updates, the developer plans transformative gameplay modifications, including hero perks and the controversial return of loot boxes.

All eyes remain on whether these changes can revitalize Overwatch 2's dwindling player base. Nearly a decade after the original's 2016 debut, Steam charts show Overwatch 2 hitting record-low concurrent numbers (37,046 peak in 24 hours), while Marvel Rivals dominates Steam's top 10 with 310,287 concurrent players.

Marvel Rivals Dominates Steam Charts

Overwatch 2 continues struggling with player perception, maintaining a 'mostly negative' Steam rating months after briefly becoming the platform's worst-reviewed game in August 2023. Criticism focuses on monetization practices and broken promises, particularly the controversial transition from paid to free-to-play that rendered the original Overwatch inaccessible. The cancellation of the promised PvE Hero mode - the sequel's primary justification - further eroded community goodwill.
