Bethesda Denies Oblivion Remake Plans

by Sebastian Dec 08,2025

Bethesda Game Studios has clarified its philosophy behind labeling Virtuos' newly released project as The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered rather than a full remake.

The acclaimed RPG developer explained its distinction between remastering and remaking through a social media post. While acknowledging both new players and returning fans, Bethesda explicitly stated they "never intended to completely remake the game."

"Our vision was always to remaster - preserving the original gameplay experience you remember, but showcasing it through modern technological capabilities," Bethesda elaborated.

The studio's clarification comes alongside the official launch, allowing players to experience visual enhancements and select gameplay improvements firsthand. Notable additions include:

  • A new sprinting mechanic
  • A redesigned leveling system blending Oblivion's original progression with Skyrim's approach

Despite numerous upgrades affecting everything from environmental textures to gameplay mechanics, Bethesda maintains this release isn't fundamentally transformative enough to qualify as a remake. The team began development in 2021 amidst industry trends favoring minimal visual updates over comprehensive redesigns.

"We meticulously enhanced every component while preserving the game's essence," Bethesda noted. "This remains a product of its time and should maintain that authentic feel."

The developer expressed gratitude toward both longtime fans and newcomers: "Whether you're rediscovering Cyrodiil or exploring it for the first time, we hope emerging from the Imperial sewers feels just as magical as ever."

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Comprehensive resources include:

  • Interactive world maps
  • Complete walkthroughs for main and guild quests
