Sony Considers PS5 Price Hike After $685M Tariff Hit
Sony is considering price increases in response to the significant financial impact of tariffs on its operations.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment company reported its fiscal results for the year ending March 2025, and during a subsequent investor Q&A session, executives addressed the consequences of Trump's tariff policies.
Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao stated that tariffs are projected to cost Sony approximately 100 billion yen (about $685 million), assuming the currently implemented tariffs remain unchanged. These tariffs affect Sony due to its substantial hardware manufacturing operations, which include video game consoles like the PlayStation 5.
Tao indicated that Sony is exploring ways to offset these costs, potentially by increasing prices on its hardware, which could include the PS5.
"When assessing the tariff impact, we are not just calculating a straightforward cost amounting to 100 billion yen. We are evaluating current market data and trends, and we may adjust pricing and manage shipment allocations accordingly," Tao explained during the live-translated investor webcast.
"We are implementing various strategies to mitigate the estimated 100 billion yen impact."
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki specifically addressed PlayStation, mentioning that the company is considering manufacturing consoles in the United States to avoid tariffs.
"These hardware units can certainly be produced locally," Totoki said. "I believe that would be a practical approach. The PS5 is currently manufactured in multiple regions. Whether production will shift to the U.S. is something we need to evaluate moving forward. We are not in an urgent situation at this time."

Industry analysts have suggested to IGN that Sony may follow Nintendo and Microsoft's lead and increase game prices to $80. Could the PS5 lineup, including consoles, also see price hikes? Many anticipate a price increase for the PS5 Pro, leading some consumers to purchase the console preemptively before any official announcement.
Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners, told IGN that Sony has already raised console prices in some regions, and the U.S. might be next.
"Sony has increased console prices multiple times outside the U.S.," he noted. "Both Sony and Microsoft have been hesitant to raise prices in the U.S. due to the market's size and significance for console sales. However, we would not be surprised if Sony follows with PS5 price increases in the U.S."

James McWhirter, Senior Analyst at Omdia, added, "PS5 hardware is primarily manufactured in China, which exposes Sony's supply chain to considerable risk from U.S. tariffs. However, the console market typically sees up to half of its annual sales in the fourth quarter. This has given both Microsoft and Sony additional time to rely on existing inventory. In 2019, consoles were exempted from Chinese import tariffs, but that exemption did not take effect until August."
"With Microsoft recently adjusting prices this week, it paves the way for Sony to do the same with the PS5. This will be a difficult decision in the U.S., the world's largest console market, which has largely been spared—except for the $50 increase on the PS5 Digital Edition in late 2023."
