PlayStation 6 rumored as dockable handheld

by Connor Nov 12,2025

We're approaching the five-year mark for the current console generation from Microsoft and Sony, making increased speculation about their next hardware offerings inevitable. This latest rumor regarding a potential PlayStation 6 handheld includes intriguing details that, if accurate, could position it as direct competition to Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2.

Industry insider Moore's Law Is Dead recently suggested in a video that this unannounced PlayStation handheld would feature dockable functionality and backwards compatibility with both PS4 and PS5 titles. The channel also shared alleged technical specifications, including a 16CU RDNA 5 integrated GPU running at 1.20 GHz in handheld mode and 1.65 GHz when docked.

Potential Pricing and Performance

According to the report, the PS6 handheld would be "significantly" more affordable than Microsoft's Xbox Ally X while offering superior aging performance and raw power. Notably appearing alongside this leak was mention of a potential "PS6S" model, presumably a less powerful variant similar to Xbox's Series S strategy.

Moore's Law Is Dead projects pricing between $299-$399 for the PS6S, $399-$499 for the handheld version, and $549-$699 for the base PS6 console, with all three potentially launching in fall 2027. The leaks reportedly stem from recent AMD documentation, though Sony has yet to officially confirm any next-gen hardware details.

Sony's Console Commitment

During a recent investor interview, SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino addressed PlayStation's future strategy while defending traditional console gaming: "Our belief is that most players want locally executed gameplay, independent of network conditions - this has been validated by PS5 and PS5 Pro success." While remaining vague about specifics, Nishino confirmed PlayStation is "committed to exploring new ways for players to engage with our content."

Industry experts note console manufacturers typically begin next-gen development shortly after current generation launches. Following this pattern, PS6 development may have already been underway for several years, potentially including handheld components as evidenced by the Portal's development.

There is however significant debate about whether Sony could adopt a discless console model. Former SIE executive Shawn Layden cautioned: "With presence in 170 countries, Sony must consider markets without reliable broadband access." Meanwhile, reports suggest AMD secured the PS6 chip contract over Intel in 2022.

If Sony maintains its seven-year console cycle, PS6 would target a November 2027 release. Industry analysts suggest several major titles including Kojima Productions' Physint and CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 4 may be positioned as next-gen launch titles.
