Overwatch 2 Shows Signs of Recovery in Season 15

Nearly nine years after Overwatch's 2016 debut and two-and-a-half since Overwatch 2's launch, Season 15 appears to be shifting player sentiment positively. This marks significant progress for what was once Steam's worst-rated game in history.

The turnaround follows Overwatch 2's disastrous August 2023 reception when negative reviews overwhelmingly criticized Blizzard's monetization strategy and the controversial transition from premium to free-to-play that made the original Overwatch inaccessible.

Controversies That Shaped Overwatch 2's Reputation

The sequel faced multiple setbacks, none more damaging than canceling its promised PvE Hero mode - the feature many believed justified Overwatch 2's existence.

While Steam's overall reviews remain "mostly negative," recent weeks show marked improvement to "mixed" ratings, with 43% of 5,325 latest reviews being positive. Though modest numerically, this represents meaningful progress for the embattled title.

Season 15's Transformative Changes

The current season introduces radical gameplay modifications:

  • Hero perks system implementation
  • Surprise return of loot boxes
  • Core mechanic adjustments

Players have responded enthusiastically, with one reviewer noting: "This update delivers what Overwatch 2 should have been from launch, before corporate decisions compromised the experience."

Marvel Rivals: The Unexpected Catalyst

The emergence of NetEase's Marvel Rivals (40 million downloads since December) has reportedly pushed Blizzard to innovate more boldly. Game director Aaron Keller acknowledges Marvel Rivals' success forced Blizzard to abandon conservative approaches, stating: "We're no longer playing it safe."

While Steam player counts have almost doubled to 60,000 concurrent peaks, Overwatch 2 still trails Marvel Rivals' 305,816 concurrent Steam players. However, considering Overwatch 2's availability across Battle.net and consoles (with undisclosed player counts), the full picture remains unclear.

Season 15 demonstrates potential for Overwatch 2's rehabilitation, though sustained improvement will require continued innovation and player-focused updates.
