Helldivers 2 Main Focus for Arrowhead, CEO Promises Long-Term Support with Player Engagement
In response to fan concerns about the future of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has reassured the community that the game remains their top priority. Following the game's explosive launch and the full-scale Illuminate invasion, Jorjani took to the official Helldivers Discord to address worries that Arrowhead might shift focus to their next project, tentatively called "Game 6."
Jorjani emphasized the studio's commitment to Helldivers 2, stating, "It's ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it slowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time." This statement came after a fan expressed concern over a quote from Jorjani that seemed to suggest a diversion of resources from Helldivers 2.
The CEO further elaborated on the longevity of Helldivers 2, saying, "As long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits we can keep it going." He credited the community's support for turning around the game's fortunes after a challenging period last summer, ensuring a bright future for the title.
In an interesting development, Jorjani hinted that Arrowhead's next game, "Game 6," would be entirely self-funded, allowing the studio full creative control. He stated, "The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we'll call 100% of those shots." This suggests that "Game 6" will not be published by Sony, and it's unlikely to be Helldivers 3.
Reflecting on the development process, Jorjani discussed the challenges faced during the eight-year journey of creating Helldivers 2. He noted the importance of playtesting and said, "For our next game, we're doing things in a much smarter way and nailing a lot of the core s\*\*t early on (as you should) then make the rest."
Despite the tumultuous events post-launch, including changes to PSN account requirements and community feedback on game balance, Arrowhead's commitment to Helldivers 2 remains steadfast. Production Director Alex Bolle echoed this sentiment, telling IGN, "We want it to be around for years and years and years to come." He highlighted the studio's motivation to continue developing new features and systems while staying true to the game's core identity.
Recent leaks suggest exciting updates on the horizon, including the potential addition of Super Earth as a playable map, as the Illuminate threat reaches our home planet. With Helldivers 2 holding the record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game, selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, Arrowhead's focus on long-term support and creative innovation bodes well for the future of this beloved title.
