Frostpunk 1886 Remake Planned for 2027, Frostpunk 2 Updates Continue

11 bit studios unveils Frostpunk 1886, a reimagined version of the original game, set for release in 2027.

The Polish studio is leveraging Unreal Engine 5 for this project, announced just months after Frostpunk 2’s debut. The original Frostpunk launched in 2018, meaning the remake will arrive nearly a decade later.

Frostpunk is a survival city-builder set in an alternate 19th-century frozen world. Players construct and manage a city during a global volcanic winter, balancing resources, making tough survival decisions, and exploring beyond the city for survivors and supplies.

IGN’s review of Frostpunk gave it a 9/10, praising its “engaging and unique strategy blend, despite occasional complexity.”

Frostpunk 2 earned an 8/10 from IGN, noted for its “larger, more complex social and political dynamics, though less personal than the original.”

11 bit studios confirmed ongoing Frostpunk 2 updates, including DLC and a console release, alongside development of Frostpunk 1886.

“With the studio’s Liquid Engine, used in Frostpunk and This War of Mine, now retired, the team sought a new platform to reimagine the original’s legacy,” 11 bit explained.

“Frostpunk 2 will see continued major updates, a console launch, and DLCs, while Frostpunk 1886 revisits the franchise’s origins, delivering an enhanced survival experience for both new players and veterans of New London.

“Titled Frostpunk 1886 to mark the Great Storm’s descent on New London, this remake goes beyond visuals, introducing new mechanics, laws, content, and a unique Purpose path, ensuring a fresh challenge for experienced players.

“Rebuilding Frostpunk in Unreal Engine enables a dynamic, expandable platform with long-requested mod support—previously unfeasible due to engine constraints—and opens doors for future DLCs.”

11 bit studios emphasized that “Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 will evolve together, each shaping the saga of survival in a frozen world.”

The studio is also developing The Alters, slated for release in June.
