EA Postpones Battlefield Amid GTA 6 Launch

by Savannah Oct 15,2025

2025 promises to be an exceptional year for blockbuster video games. Beyond the anticipated launch of Nintendo Switch 2 and its exclusive titles, a slew of major releases like Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, and Ghost of Yōtei are slated for later in the year. Activision’s inevitable Call of Duty installment will likely join the fray in October or November.

The crown jewel, however, remains Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6, currently targeting a fall 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While Take-Two insists on sticking to this window, lingering uncertainty—combined with fierce competition—could pose challenges for EA’s Battlefield in securing its foothold.

EA plans to launch the next Battlefield by April 2026 (its fiscal year-end), placing it squarely in GTA 6’s potential dominance—and possibly alongside Call of Duty and Borderlands 4. This raises the question: How heavily does EA weigh rival release dates when scheduling Battlefield?

Quite significantly, admits CEO Andrew Wilson in a recent earnings call—hinting that a delay isn’t off the table.

"We operate in a competitive landscape," Wilson remarked when pressed by an analyst. "Having been here 25 years, we’ve navigated such challenges before. But this Battlefield represents our largest investment yet—four studios, extensive development time—and we aim for it to be our most ambitious entry. Launch timing is critical to fulfilling its potential and expanding our player base."

He added: "2025 may present unique market dynamics. If approached our fiscal 2026 window and conditions seemed unfavorable, we’d reevaluate to ensure optimal timing for impact and player engagement."

Currently, Battlefield is expected by April 2026. A November 2025 launch—mirroring past entries—would risk clashing with GTA 6, potentially prompting EA to shift to early 2026. But what if Rockstar then delays GTA 6 to that same quarter? EA faces tough choices: accelerate Battlefield’s release, postpone it beyond fiscal 2026, or hold firm—options Wilson confirms are under consideration.

The industry watches Rockstar’s next move closely. Once GTA 6’s release date crystallizes—be it fall 2025 or a 2026 delay—publishers like EA will finalize their strategies accordingly.
