FF Creator Unveils Plans for FF6 Spiritual Successor
Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, once poised to retire, has reignited his passion for game development and is now set on crafting a successor to the beloved Final Fantasy 6. Dive into the details of his latest project and stay updated on its development journey.
Final Fantasy Creator to Develop His Final Game Again
The Successor to Final Fantasy 6
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the visionary behind the Final Fantasy series, is inspired to create a new game drawing from the legacy of Final Fantasy 6. After the acclaim of his 2021 release, Fantasian Neo Dimension, Sakaguchi initially intended it to be his swan song. However, speaking with The Verge, he revealed a change of heart, expressing a desire to develop "a successor to Final Fantasy VI."
Despite contemplating retirement, Sakaguchi found the experience of working with his talented team on Fantasian too rewarding to walk away from. This has led to the decision to collaborate with the same team on a new endeavor. Their aim is to blend the old with the new, creating a game that Sakaguchi describes as "part two of my farewell note."
Development on Sakaguchi’s Latest Project
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed he's actively developing a new project. He shared that it's been roughly a year since he completed the script, and he anticipates reaching a significant milestone within two years. Additionally, Mistwalker's filing of a trademark for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" in June 2024 has sparked speculation among fans about a potential sequel to Fantasian.
Sakaguchi has indicated that his upcoming project will resonate with the fantasy RPG style of his past works, though no official title or detailed information has been announced yet.
Reuniting with Square Enix for FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
Mistwalker joined forces with Square Enix to expand the reach of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, releasing it on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Initially an Apple Arcade exclusive since its 2021 debut, Fantasian has been hailed as one of the platform's finest offerings. Reflecting on the collaboration, Sakaguchi remarked, "It’s the place where I started my career, so coming full circle through the game I envisioned to be my final work was definitely a fascinating experience."
Sakaguchi's journey began at Square (now Square Enix) in 1983, where he directed the inaugural Final Fantasy game in 1987 and the subsequent four mainline entries. He later served as a producer for Final Fantasy 6 through Final Fantasy 11 before departing in 2003 to establish Mistwalker. Under this new banner, he developed titles such as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. His most recent project, Fantasian, released in 2021, evolved into FANTASIAN Neo Dimension with Square Enix's involvement in 2024.
Despite the successful partnership, Sakaguchi remains firm on not revisiting Final Fantasy or his past creations, stating he has "switched to a consumer rather than a creator."
