Bungie's Extraction Shooter 'Marathon' Shows Signs of Life
After a year of silence, Bungie's Game Director finally shared an update on their upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon. Initially unveiled at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game has generated considerable excitement, but details remained scarce until now.
Bungie's Marathon: A Developer Update
A Distant Release, but Playtests on the Horizon for 2025
Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed community concerns directly. He confirmed *Marathon* is Bungie's take on the extraction shooter genre, clarifying its identity for those unfamiliar with the project. While gameplay footage remains unavailable, Ziegler assured fans the game is progressing well, undergoing significant revisions based on extensive player testing. He hinted at a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities. Two Runners, "Thief" and "Stealth," were showcased via screenshots, their names suggesting their respective playstyles.
Expanded playtests are planned for 2025. While limited internal testing occurred during the development hiatus, Ziegler emphasized a broader player participation goal for future milestones. He urged fans to wishlist the game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to signal interest and facilitate future communication.
Marathon: A Reimagining of a Classic
A reimagining of Bungie's 1990s trilogy, *Marathon* marks Bungie's first major departure from the *Destiny* franchise in over a decade. It's not a direct sequel, but a title set within the same universe, designed to resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers. The game will include references for those familiar with the original trilogy, but prior knowledge isn't required to enjoy the experience.Set on Tau Ceti IV, Marathon casts players as Runners competing for alien artifacts and valuable loot. Players can team up or play solo, facing potential conflicts with rival crews or perilous last-second extractions.
Initially conceived as a PvP-focused game without a single-player campaign, Ziegler's update suggests the addition of elements to modernize the game and introduce a new storyline.
Marathon is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save functionality.
Navigating Development Challenges
In March 2024, original project lead Chris Barrett's departure from Bungie following allegations of misconduct, as reported by Bloomberg, resulted in Joe Ziegler taking over as Game Director. This, coupled with significant workforce reductions (approximately 17% of staff laid off), undoubtedly impacted development timelines.
While a 2025 release seems distant, the planned playtests offer a glimmer of hope. The recent update suggests progress continues despite the setbacks, and fans can anticipate further news as development progresses.
