Dragon Quest 12 Progressing Well, Says Horii

by Ellie Jan 07,2026

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii confirms Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate remains in active development.

The game was first revealed during the franchise's 35th anniversary celebration in 2021, marking the first new mainline title since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. After years of silence, Horii broke his quiet period last February by confirming Square Enix's team was "working diligently" on the project, promising details would emerge gradually.

True to his word, updates have remained sparse. However, Horii recently told Gamereactor that development continues as planned.

This 2021-released logo remains Dragon Quest 12's sole visual confirmation.

"My apologies for not sharing specifics," Horii stated. "The entire team is pouring tremendous effort into this project. While I can't reveal details, I promise our next installment will deliver Dragon Quest's signature quality. Please anticipate its eventual release."

Although fans might prefer gameplay footage or screenshots, this confirmation should ease concerns about potential cancellation due to Square Enix's corporate restructuring and prolonged silence.

May 2024 saw Horii pay tribute to late Dragon Quest collaborators Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). This followed series producer Yu Miyake's transition to head Square Enix's mobile gaming division.
