Xbox UK to Require Age Verification in 2026

by Sarah Nov 03,2025

Microsoft now requires UK-based Xbox users to verify their age to maintain full access to the platform's social features.

This change responds to the UK's Online Safety Act, with Microsoft planning similar implementations globally in coming months.

The verification currently applies only to UK accounts marked as 18+ and remains optional temporarily. Starting early 2016, unverified accounts will lose access to Looking for Group tools and custom clubs. Their functionality will be limited to basic voice/text communication, party features, game invites, and user-generated content visible only to Xbox friends. Twitch streaming and Discord integration will be disabled for these accounts.

"We're introducing age verification for UK Microsoft accounts accessing Xbox services," the company explained in a recently published FAQ. "This ensures age-appropriate experiences while maintaining community safety standards.

"Both new and existing users may need to verify through Yoti - our trusted third-party identity verification partner."

Yoti has become a standard age verification provider for UK platforms implementing social feature restrictions. Recent weeks have seen multiple services including Reddit and Bluesky adopt similar requirements across adult content and social platforms.

Xbox users can verify through multiple methods: a live photo, mobile number confirmation, credit card verification, or government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID).

"Age verification won't affect existing purchases, gameplay history, or achievements," stated Kim Kunes, Vice President of Gaming Trust & Safety at Xbox. "We recommend completing this one-time process now to maintain uninterrupted access to social features.

"We'll monitor the UK rollout closely to inform our global safety strategy," Kunes added. "Plans are underway to expand verification requirements to additional regions."

As the first major console manufacturer to implement such measures under the Online Safety Act, industry observers anticipate PlayStation and Nintendo will follow with comparable requirements soon.
