Virtua Fighter Unveiled: Exclusive In-Engine Gameplay Preview

Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of dormancy. Developed by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a tantalizing preview of the game's visual style and combat.

The last significant Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster. While not actual gameplay, the new footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, provides a glimpse into the game's in-engine graphics. The meticulously choreographed combat sequences suggest a polished and refined fighting experience, a departure from the raw, unfiltered feel of previous entries. This comeback could solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games.

A Visual Evolution

The new Virtua Fighter moves beyond its polygonal roots and hyper-stylized characters, embracing a more realistic aesthetic. The visuals appear to blend elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The footage features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in updated outfits, a significant departure from his classic look.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at the Helm

Development is led by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. This studio is also handling Sega's ambitious Project Century. The involvement of this renowned studio bodes well for the game's quality and innovation.

While details remain scarce, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter franchise is clear. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The new footage generates considerable excitement for this long-awaited return.
