Joseph Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy will helm this exciting project, which promises to bring the iconic series back to the big screen with a fresh perspective.

Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy is on board to pen the script, building upon an initial draft from Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy's recent work includes writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, created by his brother, Tony Gilroy. This collaboration brings together a talented team of creatives to reimagine the beloved franchise.

Miami Vice is a highly influential NBC police series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. The show, which aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives Crockett and Tubbs. It is celebrated for revolutionizing the aesthetics and storytelling of television, setting new standards for visual and auditory experiences in TV series.

The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann, known for his work on Heat and Collateral. The movie starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, and while it received mixed reviews, it further cemented the Miami Vice brand in popular culture.

Further details about the new Miami Vice film are sparse at this stage. It is clear, however, that this will not be Kosinski's next project following the release of his film F1 in June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to prepare for the new venture, including deciding on the perfect Ferrari for the film's signature style.
