Top 13 Comics for Free Comic Book Day 2025

by Sophia May 14,2025

May has arrived, and with it comes the eagerly anticipated Free Comic Book Day. Held annually on the first Saturday of May, comic shops around the globe participate by distributing free comics, many of which serve as enticing introductions to upcoming major storylines and best-selling series. It's an event worth attending, even if it means navigating through bustling crowds to secure the most sought-after titles.

In 2025, the lineup is as exciting as ever. From DC's DC All In 2025 Special Edition to Marvel's Fantastic Four/X-Men and The Amazing Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe books, and the latest Energon Universe special, these are the comics you won't want to miss out on during this year's event.

The Amazing Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe #1

Publisher: Marvel

Marvel's first of several specials, this issue presents two original stories. The first, penned by Joe Kelly and illustrated by John Romita, Jr., acts as a primer for the recently relaunched Amazing Spider-Man series. The second story, crafted by writers Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar with art by Jonas Scharf, serves as a prologue to the upcoming Ultimate Universe crossover event, drawing Miles Morales into the new Ultimate U.

Blood Type #0

Publisher: Oni Press

Oni Press is expanding its EC Comics imprint this summer with new series, including Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino's vampire title, Blood Type. For an early glimpse into this new series, Blood Type #0 is the perfect choice, reprinting the short story from the anthology series Epitaphs From the Abyss that launched the Blood Type saga.

Conan: Scourge of the Serpent #1

Dark Horse's FCBD special features two of its biggest franchises. Energon Universe 2025 Special #1

Publisher: Skybound

Skybound surprised fans with the reveal that Void Rivals was the launchpad for a new shared universe involving Transformers and G.I. Joe. This issue features three new short stories and a twist so significant that it warranted a censored cover.

Fantastic Four/X-Men #1

Publisher: Marvel

Marvel pairs the X-Men and Fantastic Four in their second big FCBD release. This issue includes a new Fantastic Four tale from Ryan North and Humberto Ramos, and on the X-Men side, Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing revisit the day Charles Xavier first assembled the All-New, All-Different X-Men, revealing the one mutant who declined the invitation.

How to Participate in Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Most comic book shops will participate, but you can use the FCBD Store Locator to find a participating shop near you and confirm their involvement.

Many shops also run promotions and sales during FCBD. It's important to remember that while the comics are free for customers, store owners still incur shipping costs, so supporting these sales can be a great way to show appreciation.

For those who prefer digital reading, most FCBD books are eventually available on apps like Comixology, Marvel Unlimited, and DC Universe, although there might be a wait of a few days or weeks depending on the publisher.

Gargoyles: Demona #1

Publisher: Dynamite

While Disney hasn't revived Gargoyles in animation, Dynamite is expanding the comic line with this special that sets up the Gargoyles: Demona series, written by creator Greg Weisman.
