Tom Cruise Tests Stunt on Plane Wing with Director

by Mila Nov 04,2025

Tom Cruise has consistently redefined the limits of action cinema with his death-defying stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise - and the eighth installment, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, promises his most ambitious feats yet. In a revealing moment during the film's Tokyo press conference, Cruise shared how director Christopher McQuarrie challenged him with physically impossible stunt concepts, leading to an unexpected role reversal.

When the Director Becomes the Stuntman

"We were discussing the story when Chris suddenly said, 'I need you to move from here to there in just a couple seconds,'" Cruise recalled. "I had to tell him, 'That's physically impossible.' Then he suggested another extreme move, and again I responded, 'Literally cannot be done.'"

McQuarrie chuckled while remembering the exchange: "It was the simplest stunt concept - but for the first time ever, Tom kept saying no. Hearing 'can't' from him was... unusual."

The Physics Challenge

With decades of stunt experience across seven M:I films, Cruise understood the aerodynamic limitations immediately. "The airspeed creates forces that make certain movements physically impossible," he explained. After a 20-minute technical breakdown failed to convince McQuarrie, Cruise proposed the ultimate demonstration: "I told him, 'You need to experience this yourself. Get in the plane, go out on that wing, and feel that wind pressure.' So there I was, training my director."

McQuarrie proved equally fearless, embracing the challenge: "It was incredible - intense but exhilarating. I'd absolutely do it again." Cruise also revealed how aircraft selection became crucial, with years of preparation dedicated to making these sequences work safely while maintaining their visual impact.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning will make its global debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24) before hitting theaters worldwide on May 23, 2025.
