Sydney Sweeney to Star in 'Split Fiction' Film Adaptation

by Amelia May 14,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Madame Web, is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game Split Fiction. This project, announced last month, is being spearheaded by Story Kitchen, the company behind the successful Sonic films. According to Variety, the film is taking shape with Wicked director Jon M. Chu at the helm and the screenplay penned by Deadpool & Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Story Kitchen is currently presenting this talented lineup to Hollywood studios, anticipating a competitive bidding war.

The role Sweeney will take on—either Zoe or Mio—has yet to be finalized. Split Fiction, which launched in March, has quickly become another hit for Hazelight and designer Josef Fares, selling over 2 million copies in its first week. It's also slated to be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2.

IGN's review of Split Fiction awarded it a 9/10, praising it as "an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that's very hard to walk away from."

In addition to Split Fiction, another Hazelight game, It Takes Two, which sold 23 million copies, is also being adapted into a movie, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson potentially starring.

While there's always a chance these adaptations may not come to fruition, the current success of video game movies suggests Hollywood is eager to make them work. Last year, Story Kitchen also announced a film adaptation of Square Enix's Just Cause, directed by Blue Beetle's Ángel Manuel Soto. The company is also working on adaptations of Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, Sleeping Dogs, and even a live-action Toys 'R' Us movie.

Meanwhile, Hazelight is already teasing its next gaming project.
