"Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Hints at Mouse Support"
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz with its innovative Joy-Con controllers, particularly due to a recently published patent hinting at mouse support. This feature has sparked excitement and curiosity among gamers worldwide. For a deeper dive into what's new with the Switch 2's Joy-Con and to mark your calendars for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, keep reading.
New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support
The Switch 2 is set to revolutionize gaming with its enhanced Joy-Con capabilities, including a rumored mouse support feature. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a publication detailing a patent filed by Nintendo for the Switch 2's Joy-Con. This document sheds light on the controller's new functionalities, notably its ability to operate as a mouse. The concept emerged following the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showcased the Joy-Con being maneuvered across a flat surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse. Although Nintendo has remained largely silent on Switch 2 specifics, this patent lends credence to the speculation surrounding the Joy-Con's advanced features.
Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers
The Switch 2's Joy-Con retains the detachable design familiar to Nintendo Switch users but introduces the novel feature of functioning as a mouse. The patent explains, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface." This indicates that the Joy-Con could be used on various surfaces to control the cursor on the Switch 2's screen.
Moreover, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock capable of charging two Joy-Cons simultaneously. An innovative magnetic attachment is also featured, which connects the Joy-Con to the console and includes a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original Joy-Con design. The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, each resembling half of a standard controller, equipped with an optical sensor on the side for mouse functionality. These can be combined into a full controller with a separate attachment, offering versatility and convenience.
It's important to note that the features detailed in the patent may not reflect the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these Joy-Con capabilities or any other related attachments for the Switch 2.
Nintendo Direct For Switch 2

The event is set to air on April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET, and will be available on all official Nintendo social media platforms.
