"Switch 2 Controller Compatible Only with GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms"
The excitement surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 is reaching new heights with the announcement that the Nintendo GameCube is making its way to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, a classic GameCube controller is also on the horizon. However, a closer look at the fine print suggests that this new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for playing GameCube games.
In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This indicates that the GameCube controller may only function properly with GameCube games available through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, and not with other Switch 2 games. Yet, as noted by VGC, other Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have often been used beyond their stated limitations by players. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer.
Despite the potential limitation, the classic GameCube controller has enough buttons to handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This could be Nintendo setting clear expectations or preventing confusion for those who might try to use the controller in unconventional ways, such as substituting it for a mouse.
For fans who already own the GameCube Controller adapter from the Wii U era, there's good news: it will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via the USB port, ensuring continued use of your existing accessories.
The Best Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Games
The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the new console, though specific pre-order dates remain undisclosed due to complications from U.S. tariffs.
This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will offer subscribers access to a plethora of iconic games from the 2000s, including titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all of which will be available at the service's launch this summer. The library is poised for future expansion, with titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more on the horizon.
