Jon Watts, the visionary behind Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, originally signed on to direct The Fantastic Four: First Steps - a prospect that thrilled fans given his stellar work with Marvel's web-slinger. But in a surprising twist, Watts himself became the reason this dream team-up never happened. The acclaimed filmmaker recently opened up about his decision to walk away, admitting he'd completely burned out after navigating pandemic-era Spider-Man productions.

The Exhausting Reality of COVID-Era Filmmaking

"I hit empty," Watts confessed during a storytelling masterclass at Malta's Mediterrane Film Festival. "Between keeping people safe with endless protocols and trying to maintain creative energy, it drained me completely." The director described the intense pressure of managing potential life-or-death scenarios while delivering blockbuster entertainment.

Post-production brought its own nightmares. "Our visual effects pipeline collapsed," Watts explained. "With vendors scattered globally and supply chains broken, simple VFX shots became impossible headaches." This perfect storm of challenges ultimately led to his departure.

A Necessary Retreat

Watts had initially committed to First Steps between Spider-Man: Far From Home and No Way Home. But when pre-production began, reality set in. "Making another massive movie through COVID? I knew I couldn't deliver greatness," he admitted. Marvel executives, having witnessed his exhaustion firsthand, completely understood his decision.
