In a surprising twist that taps into nostalgia and modern entertainment, a live-action Toys "R" Us movie is currently in development. According to Variety, the creative minds at Story Kitchen—known for their successful adaptations of video game movies such as the Sonic the Hedgehog series—aim to encapsulate the essence of childhood wonder through a thrilling, contemporary adventure that honors the Toys "R" Us brand's legacy over its 70-year journey in the toy industry.

“Toys 'R' Us is a cultural touchstone that continues impacting the child in all of us today,” stated Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. As self-proclaimed '80s kids, they expressed their honor in partnering to create a film that embodies the spirit of adventure, creativity, and nostalgia synonymous with Toys 'R' Us.

The envisioned movie draws inspiration from iconic films like Night at the Museum, Back to the Future, and Big, alongside successful toy-to-movie franchises such as Barbie. While specific casting details remain under wraps, the project will be produced by Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval for Story Kitchen, alongside Kim Miller Olko, who will produce for Toys "R" Us Studios.

“As Toys 'R' Us first film, this project is an exciting opportunity to bring the magic of our brand to the big screen,” said Miller Olko, president of Toys "R" Us Studios. She emphasized that the film will embark on a journey as limitless as play itself, igniting the electrifying sense of wonder that defines Toys "R" Us. The story is set to capture the imagination, adventure, and joy that has made Toys "R" Us a cherished destination for children of all ages.

Story Kitchen's portfolio continues to expand, having recently announced a film adaptation of Square Enix's Just Cause, with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto attached. They are also working on adaptations of Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, and Sleeping Dogs, showcasing their commitment to bringing diverse and engaging stories to the screen.
