Facebook Sequel Confirmed, Covering Recent Controversies

by Hunter Jan 12,2026

The Social Network, the 2010 film chronicling the origin story of Facebook, is set to receive a sequel.

According to Deadline, Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin will write the script and direct the follow-up, focusing on Facebook's more recent controversies.

Sorkin is reportedly concentrating on events detailed in the Wall Street Journal's The Facebook Files, which featured leaked documents indicating the social media giant was fully aware of the societal damage its algorithms were amplifying.

Play

Sorkin has previously stated his belief that Facebook played a role in the January 6, 2020 Capitol riots, though sources tell Deadline this won't specifically be a "January 6 film." Instead, it will also explore social media's impact on younger audiences and international communities.

While Sorkin appears to have a clear narrative direction, the project remains in early development with no casting confirmed. Will Jesse Eisenberg reprise his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg? Sorkin has considered a sequel for some time, and Eisenberg has previously expressed enthusiasm.

"Absolutely," Eisenberg told IndieWire in 2019 when asked about returning for a potential sequel. "Getting to play a complex character in a major production is incredibly rare. This role offered the depth you'd typically find in stage work or independent cinema, but on a massive scale. That was an extraordinary opportunity for me."
