Shrek 5's New Look Sparks Debate, Even Sonic Weighs In

Shrek 5 has just revealed its exciting new cast and a tantalizing teaser trailer, and even Movie Sonic is left scratching his head over Shrek's fresh appearance. In a light-hearted and self-deprecating TikTok video, the Sonic Movie account offered some "advice for green ogres," showcasing Movie Sonic's own transformation from his initially criticized live-action design to the much-improved version that fans embraced months later.

IGN was the first to showcase the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie back in 2018, and the initial reaction from fans was mixed, to put it mildly. The original design, with its peculiar teeth, physique, tiny eyes, and human-like fingers, sparked a significant amount of discussion. In response to the backlash, director Jeff Fowler decided to revise the controversial design, leading to a much more warmly received version of the iconic character.

While the reaction to Shrek's new look hasn't reached the level of controversy seen with Sonic's first live-action appearance, Sonic's playful response has certainly entertained his fanbase. "You know it's bad when you see the Sonic Movie account giving Shrek 5 advice," one fan commented, while another added, "No way they actually posted this" followed by a crying emoji.

The journey of Shrek 5 began with its announcement in 2016, but progress seemed to stall until Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, reignited the project in 2023, expressing enthusiasm for a Donkey spin-off as well. Universal Pictures has since shifted the release date of Shrek 5 to December 23, 2026, moving it from its original slot to make room for the Despicable Me 3 spin-off, Minions 3.
