Russell Crowe is poised to reunite with his Man of Steel co-star Henry Cavill for the upcoming Highlander remake.

Initial details about this significant casting update come from Collider, which reports that the 61-year-old Gladiator star has joined the project in a pivotal role. Directed by John Wick creator Chad Stahelski, this new reimagining will feature Crowe as Cavill's mentor, revisiting the character originally portrayed by Sean Connery in the 1986 classic (via Deadline).

Specifics on how the Highlander remake will modernize the storyline, along with additional casting news, are still under wraps. However, Stahelski previously shared with Collider: "We’re advancing the setting from the early 1500s Scottish Highlands to present-day New York and Hong Kong and beyond. This opens up tremendous opportunities for action… and introduces a love story element—though not in the way you might expect.”

Cavill's starring role in the new Highlander film was announced back in 2021. Crowe's involvement marks a reunion for the two Man of Steel actors, who last shared the screen in the 2013 Superman film. In that DC production, Crowe portrayed Jor-El, Superman's Kryptonian father and guide, setting the stage for a similar dynamic when Highlander eventually premieres.

Highlander is scheduled for a theatrical release, though an exact date has not been set. The project is being developed by Amazon MGM and United Artists, with a screenplay penned by Michael Finch, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4 and American Assassin.

Reflecting on the project after its 2021 announcement, Cavill commented: “As someone comfortable with swordplay, and with a director as skilled as Chad Stahelski leading the way, this is a unique opportunity. Immersing ourselves in franchise storytelling using every tool available will make this an adventure I—and hopefully all of you—will always remember.”
