Captain America 4 Trailer Leaks Red Hulk, Director on Secrecy

by Scarlett Nov 13,2025

Marvel had little choice but to reveal Red Hulk in the trailers for Captain America: Brave New World, according to the film’s director – even though many viewers felt the villain’s introduction should have remained a secret.

Red Hulk, the rage-fueled alter ego of Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, doesn’t appear until late in the movie’s final act. This follows an extended buildup and several moments where it seems Ross might manage to control his gamma radiation-induced temper.

Among the widespread criticism of Brave New World – widely seen as a rather dull MCU installment – fans have argued that featuring Red Hulk in promotional materials not only spoiled his dramatic entrance but also overstated his actual screen time.

However, director Julius Onah now explains that Marvel felt compelled to showcase Red Hulk ahead of the film’s release, as his appearance would have been leaked one way or another.

“When you’re making a movie like this, and it’s announced that Harrison Ford will play Thaddeus Ross, you’re dealing with a fanbase as massive and passionate as the MCU’s – at that point, the secret’s already out,” Onah told Empire.

“In an ideal scenario, it would have been fantastic to keep that reveal for the theater experience, but realistically, it would have been nearly impossible,” he continued. “Sooner or later, a toy would have surfaced, or someone would have leaked a trailer. It’s incredibly difficult to keep anything under wraps in today’s media landscape.”

While it’s true that Marvel productions constantly face leaking risks, and merchandise like action figures has spoiled story elements before, this explanation doesn’t entirely align with how other Marvel films have handled villain reveals.

Take the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, for example. Trailers confirm that the colossal villain Galactus will appear, but Marvel has carefully limited footage to brief teases – preserving his full reveal for the movie itself.

Of course, Galactus’s complete design still leaked through a Snapple promotion, of all things, and another character entirely missing from trailers has already appeared as a Funko Pop figure. Still, such spoilers tend to reach only a small portion of the total audience. What matters most to fans is what’s officially shown – and what’s held back.

Many Marvel fans believe too much of Red Hulk was shown in promotional content, potentially to generate hype for a film that otherwise felt lackluster.

Captain America is next set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, following the events of Thunderbolts*/New Avengers, where Sam Wilson began assembling his own version of Marvel’s premier superhero team.
