Rainbow Six Siege X Showcase Revealed New Details for the Update

Closed Beta Begins March 13, 2025

Ubisoft has officially announced that the Closed Beta for Rainbow Six Siege X (R6 Siege X) will commence on March 13, 2025, at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 8 PM CET, immediately following the R6 Siege X Showcase. The beta will conclude on March 19, 2025, at the same times.

To participate in the R6 Siege X Closed Beta, fans can watch the R6 Siege X Showcase on the official Rainbow 6 Twitch channel or through selected Content Creators' livestreams to earn Closed Beta Twitch drops. The beta will be accessible on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

However, some players have reported not receiving the anticipated email containing the access code for the Closed Beta. Ubisoft Support acknowledged this issue on Twitter (X) on March 14 and is actively working to resolve it and send out the emails promptly.

It's crucial to understand that R6 Siege X is not a standalone game but a significant update enhancing Siege with graphical and technical improvements.

New 6v6 Game Mode Dual Front

Ubisoft unveiled Dual Front, a dynamic 6v6 game mode that promises to revolutionize the core gameplay of Siege. According to the official website, Dual Front will bring "foundational upgrades to the core game, including visual enhancements, an audio overhaul, rappel upgrades, and more," alongside revamped player protection systems. This mode will also be free to access, allowing players to experience the tactical action of Rainbow Six Siege without cost.

The action unfolds on a new map called District, where two teams of six Operators will simultaneously attack and defend enemy sectors. This simultaneous approach introduces new strategic possibilities and gadget combinations, marking a first for R6.

While Dual Front takes center stage, the classic Siege mode remains, now referred to as "Core Siege" in the main menu. This mode features modernized updates for five iconic maps: Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe, with double texture resolution, optional 4K textures on PC, and enhanced destructible materials. Ubisoft plans to update three maps per season moving forward.

Free Access Starting Season 2 of Year 10

After a decade, Rainbow Six Siege will transition to a free-to-play model, aligning with trends set by its competitors. Initially launched as a paid game in 2015 amidst a landscape dominated by titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Battlefield Hardline, Siege's shift to a free model aims to attract new players.

At the R6 Siege X Showcase in Atlanta on March 13, Game Director Alexander Karpazis shared with PC Gamer that the move to free-to-play is designed to lower the entry barrier for new players. "We want people to invite their friends to try out Siege, and we want to give them the majority of the game so that they understand what makes this game so special," Karpazis explained. He emphasized that Siege is best enjoyed with friends, and the free-to-play model will enhance this experience.

The free access will include Unranked, Quick Play, and the new Dual Front mode. However, Ranked mode and the Siege Cup will remain exclusive to those with premium access. This strategy, as former Game Director Leroy Athanassoff explained in a 2020 interview with PC Gamer, helps to mitigate the impact of smurfs and cheaters. "Having that barrier to Ranked or Siege Cup means you have to be committed to the game," Athanassoff said. Karpazis added that this approach strikes a balance, offering new players a chance to dive in while maintaining a competitive environment for dedicated players.

Siege 2 Was Never On The Table

Contrary to industry trends, Ubisoft has decided against developing a sequel to Rainbow Six Siege. At the 10-year mark, while competitors like Overwatch and Counter-Strike have released sequels, R6 Siege has chosen a different path.

Karpazis revealed that "Siege 2 was never on the table," emphasizing that the focus has been on doing what's right for Siege and its community. The development of Siege X, which has been ongoing for three years alongside regular seasonal updates, aims to ensure the game's longevity for another decade. "Siege X, for us, is a moment where we want to make big, meaningful changes to the game," Karpazis stated. He highlighted the commitment to respecting the community that has supported the game for a decade, underscoring the importance of player feedback in shaping Siege's future.
