Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: A Guide to Obedience

Understanding Pokemon Obedience in Scarlet & Violet: A Comprehensive Guide

Pokemon obedience, a long-standing mechanic, has seen some adjustments in Generation 9. While generally mirroring previous generations (Pokémon below level 20 usually obey), Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduces a key difference: obedience is tied to the Pokémon's level at the time of capture.

How Obedience Works in Gen 9

Unlike Sword and Shield, a Pokémon's obedience in Scarlet and Violet is determined by its level when caught. Pokémon caught at level 20 or below will always obey commands. Pokémon caught above level 20 will disobey until you earn your first Gym Badge. Crucially, a Pokémon caught within the obedience range will remain obedient even if it levels up beyond that initial limit.

For instance, a level 20 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will obey commands even after leveling up to 21. However, a level 21 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will disobey until a badge is earned.

Disobedient Pokémon refuse auto-battle commands (indicated by a blue speech bubble), and may refuse moves or even self-harm in battle.

Obedience Levels and Gym Badges

Trainer Card Showing Obedience Level

Your Trainer Card (accessed via the map (Y-button) and Profile (X-button)) displays your Pokémon's obedience level. Each Gym Badge increases this level by 5. The open-world nature of Scarlet and Violet allows flexible Gym Leader order.

Badge No. Obedience Level
1 Pokémon caught at level 25 or lower obey.
2 Pokémon caught at level 30 or lower obey.
3 Pokémon caught at level 35 or lower obey.
4 Pokémon caught at level 40 or lower obey.
5 Pokémon caught at level 45 or lower obey.
6 Pokémon caught at level 50 or lower obey.
7 Pokémon caught at level 55 or lower obey.
8 All Pokémon obey regardless of level.

The obedience level is determined by the number of badges, not the specific Gym Leader defeated.

Transferred or Traded Pokémon Obedience

Traded Pokemon Obedience

Unlike previous generations, the Original Trainer (OT) ID no longer affects obedience in Scarlet and Violet. The Pokémon's level at the time of transfer or trade determines its "met level" for obedience purposes. A level 17 Pokémon traded and then leveled beyond 20 will still obey; a level 21 Pokémon received will not.
