Pokémon Go Director's Interview: Why Fans Shouldn't Worry About Scopely
Following the acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed significant concerns. These worries span from fears of increased advertisements to issues surrounding personal data privacy. However, a recent interview on Polygon with Michael Steranka, a product director at Pokémon Go, aims to alleviate these concerns.
In the interview, Steranka highlighted the synergy between Niantic and Scopely, expressing confidence that the two companies share similar values and objectives. He specifically reassured fans that Scopely has no plans to introduce intrusive ads into Pokémon Go. For players concerned about data privacy, Steranka firmly stated that Niantic will not share or sell player data to third parties. He concluded by emphasizing that the transition to Scopely's ownership would minimally impact Niantic's operations, if at all.
If it ain't broke... While it's natural to anticipate some degree of corporate influence, I believe Scopely will likely adopt a light touch in managing Pokémon Go. The game has been, and continues to be, incredibly successful. From a business perspective, the more significant development might be Niantic's new spin-off team focused on expanding augmented reality applications.
Steranka also pointed out the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in Pokémon Go's decision-making process. This partnership suggests that any actions not aligned with The Pokémon Company's standards would be unlikely to occur, either now or in the future.
