PlayStation Expands with New AAA Studio

Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

A recent job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment has established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a high-profile, original AAA IP exclusively for the PS5.

The news has generated significant excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions of studios such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have further fueled this anticipation.

The identity of the new studio remains undisclosed, but speculation points to two potential origins:

Possible Scenario 1: A Bungie Offshoot

One theory suggests the studio comprises a team spun off from Bungie following layoffs in July 2024. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, and this new studio could be the result of that integration, potentially working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

Possible Scenario 2: Jason Blundell's Team

Another strong contender is a team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell, formerly co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, seemingly under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of this team compared to the potential Bungie offshoot, this scenario appears more likely.

Regardless of its origins, the new Los Angeles studio is developing a "groundbreaking" original IP. While a formal announcement from Sony is expected to take time, the confirmation of yet another first-party PlayStation game in development is welcome news for fans.
