Tate Mode Mini Controller for Portrait Gaming

If you enjoy mobile gaming, you've likely tried vertical arcade titles and found the experience lacking. A modder has now developed a compact Tate mode mini controller aiming to address this long-standing issue. But does it truly deliver a solution?

Most gamepads are designed for landscape gaming on devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet classic vertical shooters and retro favorites require holding your phone upright, similar to browsing social media.

That's why modder Max Kern created an innovative solution: a miniature USB-C controller specifically designed for portrait gaming, commonly referred to as Tate mode. It connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth pairing, charging, or additional batteries.

Max constructed the Tate Mode mini controller using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the casing and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. You can build your own by following his detailed tutorial available on his YouTube channel.

What's Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

The device utilizes GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, ensuring compatibility with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac systems. This makes it remarkably versatile despite its compact design.

One potential concern is the strain on the USB-C port, as the controller bears some of the phone's weight. Users should support both the phone and controller during use to prevent potential connector damage over time.

Reactions on Reddit show divided opinions, ranging from appreciation for the innovation to concerns about ergonomic comfort. While some users find the design potentially uncomfortable, others appear more receptive to the concept.

It's worth noting this is primarily a DIY project rather than a commercial product. Max has generously shared all firmware and 3D printing files on Thingiverse and GitHub. What are your thoughts on this miniature gamepad? Share your perspective in the comments!
