Disney World's Magic Kingdom to Get Largest Ever Expansion

Disney has unveiled details about its upcoming Cars-themed expansion at Walt Disney World, officially named Piston Peak National Park. This development marks Magic Kingdom's most significant expansion to date.

According to the Disney Parks Blog, construction on Piston Peak National Park will commence this summer, requiring the temporary closure of Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat starting July 7.

Disney has revealed more about this Frontierland expansion, offering visitors an immersive wilderness experience featuring snow-capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, and geothermal wonders. While fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountain region and America's iconic national parks.

"Picture an expansive wilderness with towering evergreen forests, majestic peaks, thundering waterfalls, winding rivers, and spectacular geysers," Disney described. "Piston Peak creatively blends elements from America's frontier history with the beloved Cars universe."

The land will feature signature locations from Disney-Pixar's Cars films, including a rustic visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, and scenic trails. Imagineers are employing "Parkitecture" design principles—originally developed by the National Park Service—to create structures that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

Lush vegetation will separate Piston Peak from Frontierland and Liberty Square, while dramatic mountain ranges will frame the waterways opposite Grizzly Hall. Guests will even spot geysers from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad extending into the new area's trail system.

Originally announced at D23 2024, this Cars-inspired expansion will feature two all-new attractions. The first is an off-road rally adventure where guests will race through mountain trails, navigate around erupting geysers, and splash through muddy terrain. The second attraction offers family-friendly fun with broad appeal.

At SXSW 2025, Disney showcased innovative ride vehicle technology designed specifically for the rally experience. Each vehicle has been crafted with unique personalities and backstories, staying true to the Cars franchise's signature character-driven approach.

Piston Peak National Park represents just one phase of Magic Kingdom's transformation, with future plans including Disney's first-ever Villains-themed land. In the meantime, visitors can anticipate the debut of the Disney Starlight nighttime parade on July 20 as part of the Cool Kid Summer celebration, followed later this year by The Beak and Barrel tavern, inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean.
