Overwatch 2 Stadium Summer Roadmap: Blizzard Updates Fans

by Sadie May 27,2025

Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled an exciting roadmap for Overwatch 2 Stadium for 2025, providing a sneak peek into the heroes and features that will be added starting from Season 17 and continuing through Season 19 and beyond. The team behind this groundbreaking hero shooter has shared insights into the new mode's past, present, and future through a Director's Take blog post by game director Aaron Keller. This comes shortly after the mode's launch, which has already been available for just over a week, and offers clarity on how Stadium was developed and its performance to date.

PlayStadium Gets 7 New Heroes This Summer -------------------------------------

The rollout of Stadium will continue with the introduction of the new Damage hero, Freja, in a mid-season patch for Season 16. However, it's Season 17 in June that will truly elevate the mode. This season will see the addition of Junkrat, Sigma, and Zenyatta to the playable hero roster, accompanied by the introduction of the Esperança Push map and Samoa Control map.

Blizzard plans to further refine Stadium during Season 17 by incorporating features like Unranked Crossplay, new all-star rewards, custom games, additional example builds, and the ability to save and share builds. While it's not clear if all these additions will be available at the start of the season or rolled out throughout, the anticipation is palpable.

Season 18 will introduce Winston, Sojourn, and Brigitte as playable characters, along with the Route 66 and London maps. A new Payload Race game mode will also be added, complete with two new maps, a Stadium trials feature, and the option to Endorse teammates.

Looking ahead to Season 19 and beyond, Blizzard promises multiple new heroes, both from the existing Overwatch 2 roster and new characters, along with a new China map, a Draft Mode feature, consumables, and tweaks to the item system.

How has Stadium Performed so Far?

The Overwatch 2 team has shared impressive stats about Stadium, revealing it as the most played mode in the game, with 2.3 million matches played across 7.8 million hours during its launch week alone. This performance is more than double that of Overwatch Classic's launch week. Notably, Lucio has emerged as the hero with both the highest win rate and the lowest pick rate, and players have spent a staggering 900 billion Stadium Cash on 206 million items for their builds.

In his Director's Take, Aaron Keller clarifies that Stadium was in development before Overwatch 2 launched, debunking theories that it was created to compete with Marvel Rivals, which debuted in December 2024. Keller also commits to ongoing communication about Stadium, with more insights promised in the coming week. He reassures players that Blizzard remains dedicated to maintaining core experiences like Quick Play and Competitive, viewing Stadium as an opportunity to deliver Overwatch in a new and exciting way.

“Before signing off, I'd like to reiterate the team’s commitment to the Core modes of Overwatch," Keller stated. "We’re still pouring as much time, energy and passion into these as we always have. Stadium isn't competing for those resources: it’s giving us more opportunities to deliver Overwatch in a new, exciting way.

"We can't wait for you to see what's coming there, especially Season 18. It's going to be a banger! Have fun with Stadium and, as always, let’s make a great game.”

Overwatch 2 introduced Stadium with the launch of Season 16 last week, as part of Blizzard's efforts to revitalize its player base. This initiative began with a comprehensive Spotlight presentation in February, leading to the reintroduction of loot boxes and an improved Steam rating, with many feeling it's the best Overwatch experience in years.
